Top 10 Italian Bucket List Destinations for 2022

Here are our top ten places to see & experience in Italy and the reasons why you need to add these destinations to your bucket list.

Italy is pretty much on everyone’s bucket list travel destination. It has it all; history, cuisine, architecture, art, romance, arts, natural wonders and many more marvels. So without further adieu, here are the top ten Italian bucket list destinations. Make sure to add them to your bucket list and help us plan that visit for you as soon as possible.

1. COLOSSEUM

The one and only, the majestic, the infamous, the historical Colosseum. This 2,000 year old structure is a man made marvel that still stands today and is waiting for you to experience it. It is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and is still the largest standing amphitheater in the world today.

Millions of visitors from all over the world come every year to witness its incredible architecture. Seeing it in pictures, books or movies is not enough, you have to actually feel the Colosseum in person to understand its magnificence.

2. ROME

The Colosseum is not the only thing on people’s bucket list, furthermore there are plenty of bucket list marvels found in the city of Rome. The Pantheon is another man made marvel that is found in the heart of Rome. You will see history unfold as you walk into this 1,897 year old structure.

It is the oldest building in the world that is still being used today! You will also find the Trevi Fountain which is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Rome is also home to some famous “piazzas” which give the city open space for markets, restaurants, hang outs and more.

There are literally hundreds of things you can do in Rome that some consider to be bucket list items and for this reason, Rome too should be in your bucket list place to visit soon.

3. VATICAN CITY – SISTINE CHAPEL

Although the Vatican City is found within Rome, it is its own bucket list separate from Rome for many reasons. The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and is visited by millions of people every year. Faithful Roman Catholics, and people from other religions, visit the Vatican to enjoy the architecture, the art and the history found in this tiny country.

The greatest of all churches, St. Peter’s Basilica, is at the heart of the Vatican and one of its main attractions. Another one of its main attractions are the world famous art-works found in the Vatican Museums. You have marvelous works of art by world famous artists like Raphael and Michelangelo.

The most famous is Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel which you can visit and judge for yourself as to why this work of art is considered one the greatest masterpieces of all time!

4. VENICE

Venice is the most visited city in Italy and it is on many people’s bucket list travel destinations. It is a neo gothic city that makes any visitor fall in love with. When you visit it you wonder how the Venetians managed to build such an amazing city. About 100 small islands make up Venice.

There are no roads, everything is connected by canals. As you explore the city you will see Renaissance inspired architecture and Gothic palaces. In Piazza San Marco you will see the famous St. Mark’s Basilica which is Venice’s iconic landmark.

There is so much art, culture and history in Venice that you are going to want to come back once you leave. Don’t forget to take a gondola ride before departing, that too is in many people’s bucket list.

5. LEANING TOWER OF PISA

This structure is so rare and unique that it made it into our bucket list. Even though there is not much going on in the city of Pisa, this structure alone attracts around 5 million people (pre covid) every year. The good thing is that it is a quick trip from Florence and there are plenty of other things to do and experience in Pisa.

So take that short train ride, take that famous picture of you trying to prevent the tower from tipping over and take it off your bucket list.

6. FLORENCE

Florence is in our bucket list destination for many reasons. It is home the most famous art gallery in the world and houses many Renaissance masterpieces. Thousands of people from all over the world visit Florence every year to admire the historical art collections of famous artist like Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Botticelli and many more.

Not only is art found in Florence, but history, romance, architecture and some of the best Italian cuisine is found in here too. You will definitely fall in love with this city and will want to come back again to this bucket list destination.

7. CINQUE TERRE

No it’s not a made up movie scenery, Cinque Terre is real. It is one of Italy’s most popular regions and one of the most visited. It is a UNESCO’s cultural landscape city with beautiful coastline. It has bright and colorful houses built in the cliffs as well as world class hiking trails.

The stunning views and typical Italian cuisine are a huge plus. Cinque Terre will have you fall in love with it the moment you arrive and will make you not want to leave.

8. AMALFI COAST

Amalfi coast is another bucket list destination that makes you wonder if it is even a real place. Its unique landscape place the Amalfi Coast on the World Heritage list.

Its beautiful nature, its history of human settlement, the breathtaking topography of the coastline, its warmth, its people, its cuisine and its beauty make this region a must visit.

9. ITALIAN CUISINE

If you love Italian food, even if you dont love Italian food but you love food in general, then Italy is a must visit. Here you will try some of the most amazing food you will ever taste. From pizzas, pastas, risottos, gelatos, Italian seafood, wine, coffee and much more.

Eating authentic Italian food in its motherland should be on every food lover’s bucket list. What makes Italian cuisine special is the fact that meals are made from scratch. They use fresh herbs, vegetables and meats. Zero artificial ingredients or processed food. Yummy …

10. MILAN

Italy’s most fashionable city, Milan, houses some of the world’s most notorious and popular fashion brands. In Milan you have it all; rich history, art, culture, architecture, fashion and more…. Some iconic landmarks of Milan include The Duomo, the second largest cathedral in the world and the largest gothic cathedral ever made.

This majestic church was constructed in the 1300’s and took almost 5 centuries to complete. Another major reason why people add Milan to their bucket list it for the art. There are a lot of art museums and art pieces in Milan, the most famous one being Da Vinci’s Last Supper.
