Houston Texas’ best family park – Discovery Green

One of Texas best family parks is located in Houston Tx, come discover why Discovery Green is the perfect place for a family outing.

Discovery Green

My favorite park to go to in Houston has to be Discovery Green! It is the perfect place to bring out of town visitors, have a picnic in the park, exercise, play with young ones and so much more. Right in the heart of downtown Houston, it is located near all of the sites you cannot miss, so it should definitely be on your list of places to go and see.

It has always been one of my favorite places to go and spend an afternoon, but it is especially comforting during this time of pandemics. There is so much more to this place than just a park, so here I will tell you all the ins and outs of Discovery Green.

Activities:

There are plenty of green areas for you to play games, enjoy a picnic, or throw a ball around. Also, right now it is winter so they have an ice skating rink for you to enjoy! During the warmer months they have a splash pad, kayaking and sail boat racing as well.

There is a huge park for the kids to play and so much more. You are guaranteed to have a good time here and just take in the views of Downtown Houston.

Events:

Discovery Green hosts many events throughout the year. From concerts, to yoga classes, cultural celebrations, dance classes, cooking classes, to hosting food trucks and art displays to so much more.

There is always something to do or see when you visit Discovery Green, especially if you go on a weekend. Be sure to check out their website by clicking here to find an event you would like to attend.

Food:

I mentioned food trucks and they do have them occasionally, but there are two restaurants located in Discovery Green for you to enjoy every day. There is the Lake House which has hamburgers and hot dogs or the Grove which is a bit more upscale, but nice.

I suggest getting a drink at the Grove on their balcony and enjoy overlooking the park and people watching. The best way to eat at Discovery Green though for me would be to pack a picnic. We like to go to the market across the street, Phoenecia, and get food and bring it back to the park.

They have so many options for you there, and the food is delicious! We have also done take out and brought it there as well. Either way, it can be quite romantic or peaceful and is a great way to enjoy the afternoon.

Art displays:

Something I love about Discovery Green is their tributes to local artists throughout the year. There is always an art display of some sort whether it is sculptures, paintings, performance art, etc., Discovery Green allows the Houston Arts an outlet.

Being a lover of the arts myself, this is one of my favorite parts of this park. I am always excited to see what new displays are here. Be sure to take some time and appreciate the work put into making Discovery Green even more beautiful and value these artist’s hard work.

Location:

As I mentioned earlier, Discovery Green is in the heart of Downtown, located right in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center. It’s location makes it very convenient to explore downtown from here.

Address: 1500 McKinney St, Houston, TX 77010

Parking:

People always ask about parking, and it isn’t as scary as it may seem. Almost every time I’ve been, I have found metered parking along the street near the park, unless there was a big event. There are plenty of parking lots you can pay for nearby, just be prepared to be taken for your money if there is an event that night.

Also, Discovery Green is located in between 2 hotels and a convention center who all have their own garages that you can pay to park in, as well as there is a parking garage underneath the park. The garage under the park is more expensive, so I suggest parking on the street if you can find a space or at the garage for the convention center.

If you have any questions about what you should do at Discovery Green or a out any of these activities, please reach out! Also comment below your favorite park in Houston so we can be sure to check it out!
